Tornado touches down in South Carolina amid weekend storms
EF-1 twister touched down in Chapin area Sunday
CHAPIN, S.C. (WBTV) - A tornado touched down and crossed a South Carolina lake Sunday morning as a line of strong storms pushed through the southeast.
The National Weather Service (NWS) confirmed that the twister touched down at 7:38 a.m., and stayed on the ground until 7:48 a.m.
An NWS report said the tornado former over Lake Murray near Dreher Island before it downed trees in the Chapin area. From there, the twister moved into the Timberlake neighborhood, then caused its most concentrated damage near Isle of Pines Drive.
After crossing Isle of Pines Drive, the NWS said the tornado re-entered the lake and moved back onto land near Indian Cove Road before it dissipated by the time it got to Indian Fork Road.
The NWS report said the twister was 125 yards wide and traced a path 5.8 miles long. It was categorized as an EF-1 tornado.
Sister-station WIS reported that the tornado’s peak winds reached 90 mph.
Nobody was hurt in the tornado, despite the area having some wind damage.
Elsewhere in the Carolinas, two boys died Sunday morning after a tree fell on their home in western North Carolina.
